Incidents such as this do no justice to those professional investigators who operate entirely within the law. It is an outrage that NOTW have potentially caused so much damage to the investigation industry by using underhand tactics and a select few investigators that have abused their knowledge, why, simply to gain more revenue by offering what they perceived to be exciting stories to the public, instead the public were the victims!

I personally am disgusted each time I learn that there are more victims of the NOTW saga.

Earlier this year Channel 4 News revealed Cook’s claims that journalists from the News of the World had been tailing him and putting his house and family under surveillance.

It has been alleged that suspects in the murder investigation were private investigators who had had close links to the News of the World.

Several months after the alleged surveillance, Cook raised the issue directly at a meeting at Scotland Yard with the then editor of the News of the World Rebekah Brooks, but Brooks has not yet been able to give an account, in public, of that meeting.

The Metropolitan Police Commissioner at the time, Sir (now Lord) John Stevens, was aware of the meeting, but no formal action by the police appears to have ensued.

Julian Smith, the MP for Skipton and Ripon, has claimed North Yorkshire Police Authority (NYPA) had been unaware of the amount of time spent by North Yorkshire police officers on the early stages of its investigation into Cleveland Police Authority.

He said it was unlikely North Yorkshire would ever recover the money spent launching Operation Sacristy, between August 2010 and April this year.

MISSING PEOPLE
People go missing, whether its intentional or not, sometimes they appear to just vanish off the face of the earth, nowhere to be found. There are dozens of circumstances surrounding the reasons, the person may have chosen to vanish or leave the matrimonial home because of a relationship breakdown or simply because they have begun a new relationship without their partner knowing. Teenagers or young children go missing, which, is in itself is a harrowing experience for the parents, the police are often called in but if there is no obvious risks to their safety there is little they can do other than keep an eye out for them. That said, minors receive far more attention and resources and often utilise specialist officers and strategic community policing to search for the child. Teenagers though present a different story, its sad to say that many teenagers these days find themselves involved with unsavoury characters, or young adults who experiment with drugs and other paraphernalia and even prostitution. Most often than not, teenagers don’t go far, a family argument or disagreement is usually all it boils down to but the worst case scenario is never dismissed from a parents thoughts.

One client who recently contacted us that was obviously concerned for her son and his safety, explained that he was returning home later and later each evening, arguments would spark up and he would often threaten the mother to leave home, never to return. His attitude had changed dramatically over a short period of time and there appeared to be no obvious reason, the mother was obviously at the end of her tether. Having received her instructions and discussed fees we set about investigating the 15 year old lad to determine what it was that was deliberately causing his sudden change of character, we had our suspicions following a thorough search of his bedroom under the supervision of his mother.
We had discovered from friends that he had become pals with some local lads from the skate park, one of the friends suggested that the lads may be using drugs later in the evening when the younger children had left to return home. We decided to observe the area one evening and could clearly identify the teenager in the park, thanks to high powered zoom lenses mounted on a DSLR and tripod in the rear of the vehicle we were able to obtain clear footage through the tinted car windows. The evidence clearly showed the lads sniffing substances, such as, glue and gas from a lighter refill container. Two other lads appeared to be smoking weed and passing it around, most of them appeared to be older kids in their late teens.
We showed the report and images to the mother, who was extremely upset and distraught. We advised her on what to do and who to speak to in order to get advice on how to tackle the situation. We have since discovered that the evidence was shown to the son by the mother, she threatened to go to the police if her son didn’t stop, which apparently only aggravated the teenager even more, the mother has since sought advice and help from a charity group that deal with teenagers with drug problems.

Despite all the hype at present surrounding the News of The World and News International scandal, private investigators are law abiding, it is of no benefit to them or their client if they produced evidence only for it to be rejected in court because of the way it was obtained, furthermore, this could spark off further concerns with the courts incriminating the client and the investigator leading possibly to prosecution, so it would not make any sense to provide evidence that was unlawful obtained. As for the hype in the media concerning the News of The World, well, it doesn’t take a genius to work out that in every industry, no matter what it is, there will always be the odd one or two rogues who will take a risk. The actions of these people, especially tapping into the mobile phones of murder victims is despicable and totally unacceptable, it actually makes my feel sick. There are many other ways to obtain evidence but unfortunately, the news papers were not gaining evidence in a defence, or to justify someone’s actions, it was simply for monetary gain and to increase readership numbers.

Bannatyne is known on Twitter for regularly informing his followers of his movements, his locations and snippets of his personal and family life, is this wise? In an society which often involves greed and desperation, some may see this as a perfect opportunity to use the information to their advantage, said to say but true.

With so many social networking platforms available and the constant pressure from fans and followers upon the celebs to keep fans up to date, its no wonder then that it can all too easily become a serious security risk to themselves and of course their family, posting updates regularly of where they are, what they are doing, details about their family, including names, birthdays and ages etc, it doesn’t take a genius to work out the implications this can have on the safety of their family should an opportunist detect an easy target.

Bannatyne is probably not the first person at the top of an opportunists list, certainly not someone you’d consider to be easy prey, the wise ageing business tycoon has, I am sure, heard and seen many things that would make others crumble but when it comes to family and of course your own daughter, then it does become a different matter and that’s exactly where the breach in the security lays. The suspect has targeted Bannatyne’s daughter, using a weak spot to him to listen and become noticed. Duncan Bannatyne is a wealthy man, no doubt about it but we can all become too complacent, opening doors and making ourselves vulnerable to attack. Katie Price (AKA Jordan) will have as many as 6 Close Protection Officers (Bodyguards) at a book signing in WH Smith, due to security risks, granted, she is a bigger target, what with her relationships and wild accusations that seem to be in the media on a constant basis, its no surprise then that there are some unscrupulous characters who, for whatever reason, take it upon themselves to inflict misery or distress on these people.

Security is a big issue, even more so for those that constantly put themselves in the limelight or those that deliberately feel it necessary to publicise their routines, family details or pattern of movements.
Celebrities should never underestimate the terrible consequences it could have leaving yourself vulnerable and open to attack.

Sometimes, we make innocent mistakes, other times it’s greed that gets the better of us, which is more likely the reason behind all the hype at present. Of the 10,000 or so investigators claimed to be operating in the UK alone, we find ourselves amongst a select few who have taken it upon themselves to stray from the pack, so to speak. Unfortunately, this does has an effect on the rest of us.

I have been reading many quotes recently, one which read; “only 5 per cent of all PIs in the UK are affiliated to any of the trade’s varied clubs”. The point is….?

Being associated to a trade “club” does not and will never eradicate unscrupulous traders, even if the SIA decide to dirty their hands and get in on the action it will never be able to “Police” the industry, it is impossible. For example, if parliament decide to license the industry there are many out there that may decide, “I don’t want to be a part of your silly rules thank you very much…” and they can set up shop in their spare room, office, shed, wherever and trade as an investigator. They may not be able to shout from the rooftops but then again the type of rogue that chooses not to play by the rules wont, he/she is likely to have their own book of contacts.

So who will monitor them? Who will regulate what they do? and who will ensure the industry as a whole is protected from the strays? My opinion is, even if the SIA licensed the industry it would be a nightmare, who will get the blame when something similar to what has recently happened happens again? Not the SIA, not the trade groups or trade clubs, not parliament or the police (authorities), then who??
If an organisation is to regulate then it must be accountable for when things go wrong, surely it would be there responsibility to implement a budget to tackle the rogues, to search them out and fine them, bring them to justice and prevent them from trading in that capacity ever again.

I for one can’t see any of this happening, likewise, it is my personal opinion that joining a trade group/club holds no real benefit, ask a number of clients if they know who the trade clubs are, I did, only one of the 10 I asked knew, I am sure the same applies if you asked commercial or public clients, hence the reason why I don’t belong to them. I would rather spend my money promoting my services and ensuring my knowledge is bang up to date, one such organisation (club) I belonged to didn’t even offer one newsletter in the 12 months membership, in fact, they hadn’t even updated their website for a whole year. What does that tell you about a trade “club”, in addition, I was able to join and display their logo without any vetting other than a DPA/ICO registration number.

We should have ONE association, not several, that way it becomes less confusing and less costly for those that genuinely want the backing of a legitimately active organisation who’s sole interest is with the members !

The FSB (Federation of Small Businesses) for example, to which we are a member, offer many services for less cost than a green and yellow tie and tie pin! This is more like a professional association to me!
